Symptoms: Firmware Update Boot Loop

  • Server compute-14 (HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10) is stuck in a boot loop after a scheduled BIOS update.
  • The firmware was updated from BIOS v2.42 to v2.76 via iLO virtual media during a maintenance window.
  • After the update, the server reboots repeatedly. POST completes but the OS never loads.
  • The iLO/BMC interface is accessible and responsive -- remote console shows POST cycling.
  • Serial console capture shows the server reaching "Discovering boot devices..." then restarting.
  • The server hosts non-critical batch processing workloads, but jobs are piling up.
  • No hardware changes were made. The update was performed by a junior admin following a runbook.
  • Other servers of the same model updated successfully with the same firmware image.
