Symptoms

  • Applications on mail-relay-01 fail with "No space left on device" errors.
  • df -h shows the root filesystem is only 45% full with 28 GB free.
  • The server cannot create new files, write to temp directories, or create new user sessions.
  • Postfix mail queue processing has stopped because it cannot create spool files.
  • touch /tmp/testfile fails with "No space left on device".
  • The server has been running a mail relay service for 18 months.
  • A cron job creates a unique session tracking file for every inbound email.
